6 Regions of Tennessee Bluff

Cumberland Plateau  1. Few people live in this region of Tennessee because it has steep slopes or cliffs and the soil is not good for farming.

Unaka Mountains 2. This region is also called the Great Smokies are part of the Appalachian Mountains.

East Tennessee Valley and Ridge 3. This area was a refuge for Woodland and Mississippian Indians long ago.

Central Basin  4. Nashville (and Lavergne) are located in this region.

Unaka Mountains 5. This region has the highest elevation in Tennessee is Clingman’s Dome at 6,642 feet.

East Tennessee Valley and Ridge 6. Chattanooga and Knoxville are two cities that lie in this region.

Central Basin  7. This region forms the bottom of the bowl and has some of the most fertile soil in Tennessee.

Gulf Coastal Plains  8. This region was bought from the Chickasaw Indians.

Unaka Mountains 9. In this region, coves provide fertile soil and protection from weather and enemies.

Highland Rim  10. This region is the largest natural region of Tennessee.

Central Basin  11. Because of the rivers that flow through it, this region has become a farming and industrial center.

Cumberland Plateau  12. This region has the Cumberland Gap, where Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia all meet.

Gulf Coastal Plains  14. The fertile soil in this region produces a lot of cotton and grain.

Highland Rim  15. In the fertile soil of the region, farmers grow corn, wheat, and tobacco.

Central Basin  16. It is the smallest region of Tennessee.

Gulf Coastal Plains  17. The Mississippi River has caused Memphis to become one of the most important ports in the United States.

Unaka Mountains 18. Several coves, flat floored valleys, are found in the mountain’s side.

Cumberland Plateau  19. This region rises 800 to 2,000 feet above the Valley and Ridge.

Highland Rim  20. It forms a giant “bowl” around the Central Basin.

East Tennessee Valley and Ridge 21. It is sometimes called the “folded Appalachians.”
