Art Wolfe Kallan Sorensen Photo 1 Period 7

About Art Wolfe Born on September 13, 1953 in Seattle; Art Wolfe was naturally outdoorsy. Attended the University of Washington where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts and Arts Education. In 2000, he established his own publishing company, Wildlands Press and published his first book, the Living Wild. His unforgettable photographs soon brought him to fame.

Awards and Recognitions Outstanding Nature Photographer of the Year by the North American Nature Photography Association Alfred Eisenstaedt Magazine Photography Award And the first Rachel Carlson Award His own shows include: “Techniques of the Masters”, “American Photo’s Safari”, and “Travels to the Edge”

His Style His does not just consist of nature photographs, but also images of the world’s children. Most his photographs can be classified into three groups; people, places, and wildlife, but you will find that he likes to mix it up and put people with places, people with wildlife, and wildlife and habitat together for an overall culture look. His work is known as journalistic photography.

Night Fisherman Taken on the Li River in China. This photo was taken outside with natural lighting coming from behind the camera and the lanterns on the boats. The main subject of this photo is the fisherman because the lanterns help emphasize their faces. Art Wolfe is capturing the job of the night fisherman on the Li River. I chose this photo because of the contrast of the light coming from the lanterns and the rapidly darkening sky in the background.

Boxing Hares Taken in Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada. Natural lighting is being used in this photo and is coming from either the left or right side of the subject. The subject is the two hares being framed by the snowy background. The rough background against the smooth fur of the hares cause them to stand out against the all white scene. In this photo, Art Wolfe is showing how some animals deal with territory disputes. I chose this photo because I thought it was humorous of how the hares were acting so human like.

Lion and Cub Taken in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. Natural lighting is being used and was probably taken on a cloudy day so the lighting is softer. The main subject is the lion and cub and they are emphasized by standing out against the background with their golden fur. Art Wolfe uses selective focus and the rule of thirds to show how a mother lion watches out for her young. I chose this photo because of the close up shot of the lion and her cub captured their face expressions.

Snow Monkeys Taken in the Japanese Alps, Honshu Island. Natural lighting is being used on a cloudy that softens the photo. The main subject is the snow monkeys warming in the natural hot spring in the snow covered alps. The contrast of the monkeys’ fur help them stand out against the clear background while the snow and rocky edge help frame them in the spring. Art Wolfe is demonstrating on how human like monkeys really are with them huddled together in small groups. I chose this photo because I personally like snow monkeys and their expressions are priceless.

Ngorongoro Crater Taken at Ngorongoro Crater in East Africa. Natural lighting is being used and is coming from behind the camera. The subject of the photo is hard to tell; it might be the zebra and other animals or the darkening sky. Either way, this photo is a good example of horizon and is a major contrast of light and dark. With this photo, I thinks Art Wolfe is just trying to show how the crater is home to many different animals in Africa. I chose this photo because I like the display of contrast between the bright colored grassy foreground and the rapidly darkening sky causing the eye to be drawn toward the horizon.
