Frog Dissection Fall 2000 Jenna Hellack

Frog legs Hindlegs are strong and muscular because they are used for jumping Forelegs provide balance and cushion the frog when it lands after jumping

Frog Toes Fingers Toes

Frog Eye The frog has large bulging eyes The frog has 3 eyelids 2 outer ones are the color of the frog’s body and do not move 3rd eyelid is a transparent membrane that protects the eye while permitting the frog to see under water It also keeps the eye moist when the frog is on land

Eardrum and External Nares Behind the eye is the circular eardrum 2 openings in the nasal cavity-external nares are found toward the tip of the snout These will close when the frog is under water

The Frog Eye Nasal Openings Eardrum forelegs hindlegs

Frog Skin Smooth, moist, and thin Frog can breathe directly through skin as well as with lungs

Coloration Notice the difference in coloring between the belly and the rest of the frog’s body

Frog Tongue Attached to the front of the mouth Sticky- used to catch insects

Frog Teeth Ridges along the inside of upper jaw are maxillary teeth 2 vomerine teeth are located toward the front of the upper jaw

Gullet & Eustachian tubes The gullet (throat) is the wide opening that leads to the esophagus On both sides of the gullet near the jaw hinges are openings to the Eustachian tube. These lead to the eardrum Gullet

Frog Mouth Gullet

Female with eggs A female frog has ovaries which are easily identifiable if engorged with eggs.

Male The male's testes are a bright orange color. Testes

Liver: The liver secretes bile to aid in digestion of fats.

Gall Bladder 44. Gall bladder Greenish sac attached to the liver 40 38 44 46 51 49 47 52 55 56 39 42 43 50 44. Gall bladder Greenish sac attached to the liver It stores bile, which breaks down fats during digestion

Stomach Below the liver Large and white On the right side as you look at the frog Connects to the small intestine

Small Intestines The straight part of the small intestine is called the duodenum The coiled section is the ileum

Mesentery & Ileum The coils of the ileum are connected by thin, transparent membranes called mesenteries.

Large Intestine The small intestine widens to form the large intestine. The lower portion of the large intestine is called the cloaca.

Pancreas In the mesentery along the inner curve of the stomach is the pancreas which secretes digestive enzymes and insulin into the duodenum.

Spleen 40 38 44 46 51 49 47 52 55 56 39 42 43 50 Spleen In the mesentery of the coiled part of the small intestine Reddish, spherical structure The spleen is an organ in the frog’s circulatory system that makes, stores, and destroys blood cells

Lungs 2 Lungs Reddish-brown saclike structures

Frog Heart 3 chambers 2 upper chambers- right and left atria Lower chamber- ventricle

Kidney 2 dark-red kidneys attached to the back wall of the abdominal cavity. Kidneys filter out impurities from the blood.

Urinary Bladder Urinary bladder Urinary bladder empties into the cloaca Ureters-tubes leading from each kidney to the bladder

Frog internals- female 45. Stomach 46. Small intestine 47. Large intestine 48. Pancreas 49. Spleen 51. Fat bodies 52. Urinary bladder 58. Ovary 59. Oviduct
