DIGITAL JACKSON Students and Teachers Achieving with Technology Michael Kilts Director of Federal Programs Florida Grant Developers Network December 2015

Technology does not stand still! What is the new technology? – Touch screen computers – Tablets, convertibles, or 2 in 1’s – Windows 8.1 “Our students’ world is ever-changing so we can’t and must not stand still” Tony Bryant Principal of Silverton Primary School Melbourne, Australia

What are your District’s Goals? As grant writers we have to know this to add it to our proposals. Does your District have a educational technology goal? – What is it? – What is the District’s starting point?

Start Your Mbps Device Internet Infrastructure Fast/SlowWirelessTabletLaptopConnectedEEEEK!!!!

Infrastructure Shortfalls As of October 1, 2015, the Florida Department of Education reported the following: – 27% of schools in the State do not meet the bandwidth specifications – 20% of classrooms do not meet the wireless specifications

“All my life’s a circle.” Harry Chapin Infrastructure Personnel Training Programs Evaluation Doesn’t this look familiar? $$$$$$$$$$$

Another Diagram Smiagram The previous diagram is our life already as grant administrators We will not have to re-invent the wheel We just have to meet the needs of students and seek out funds the District can use to meet those needs

Funding Continuous Improvement Truly taking a comprehensive look at your available funds. What state and local funds do you have knowledge about and track as a federal or grant program administrator? Blending it in to your grant proposals as you move forward.

Digital Classrooms Plan Were you part of the development? Have you read it? Are you already funding stuff to meet its needs?

What is Digital Jackson It is a culmination of 15 months of collaboration among all stakeholders. A strategic initiative to support continuous improvement through increased technology integration in the instructional day. Students will be highly engaged, have access to proven strategies and programs, and own their educational career.

Where we stand… 2300 devices handed out to every K-3 student in January devices handed out to every 4-8 student August slated for August 2016 with 2100 more devices

The Power of the Student In an MTSSS meeting the teacher was having a tough time incorporating an intervention into the day. There just was not enough time. The student (4 th grade) popped up stating, with my device, I can access the program at home and I will do it every night- Jessica Craven, Assistant Principal at Cottondale Elementary.

Biggest Breakthrough INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY They are a tough breed to train. They live in a world. We built a bridge by hiring tech savvy teachers as technology resource teachers, who could speak both languages. We meet together and just talked and learned from each other.
