Key Vocabulary state: A part of a country country: An area of land with its own people and laws. symbol: A picture or an object that stands for something. globe: A model of Earth continent: A large area of land. location: The place where something is. map: A picture that shows locations.

Finding Where You Are A location is the place were something is. A map is a picture that shows locations. Maps can show many kinds of places like states? Some maps show countries. A country is an area of land with its own people and laws. Lines on a map show borders. A border is where a state or country ends. Can you find where you live on the map?

Use a Globe We live on Earth. You can use a globe to find places on Earth. A globe is a model of Earth. A map is flat, but a globe is round. It shows what Earth looks like from space.
