Teaching a large class is unlike any other teaching experience.

Inherent Challenges

Management of paperworkManagement of distractionsPerceived anonymity of the studentsLack of flexibility in class activitiesDiverse preparation by the students

Who uses PowerPoint ?

Who has taught a large class?

There is no one correct way to teach a large class.

Step 1 Post outlines of the lectures

elements Current System A. Statutory Law B. Common Law Ancient Law A. Roman Civil Law B. English Common Law

Step 2 Count class participation towards final grade.

I keep track of class participation and give bump in final grade to those who are outstanding.

Step 3 Pop up quizzes

Step 4 How to reduce feeling of student anonymity.

Arrive early and introduce yourself to a few students at a time.

I use a wireless remote and mic so I can teach from different parts of the classroom.

Step 5 Manage classroom climate

I go over student responsibilities on the first day and my syllabus sets forth the rules in a strict format. I become more casual as we go along.

Step 6 How to engage students and make them want to attend.

SOMETHING IS ALWAYS GOING ON BEFORE CLASS TO SET THE MOOD.

Step 7 Use a story line

Step 9 KEEP IT SIMPLE
