Presentation transcript:

a rocket is a missile, aircraft or other vehicle which obtains thrust by the reaction of the rocket discharging fluid from a rocket engine at a high speed. It was in the ninth century when people first discovered gunpowder. This accidental discovery led to experiments in the weapons such as bombs, cannon, incendiary fire arrows and rocket-propelled fire arrows. Between 1270 and 1280, 22 rocket recipes were made. They were made of 75% nitrates 9.06% sulphur and 15.94% carbon, or 75% potassium nitrate, 10% sulphur, and 15% carbon. The name rocket comes from the Italian rocchetta, meaning little fuse.

solid rockets have a number of disadvantages relative to liquid fuel rockets. Solid rockets have a lower specific impulse than liquid fueled rockets. It is also difficult to build a large mass ratio solid rocket because almost the entire rocket is the combustion chamber, and must be built to withstand the high combustion pressures. If a solid rocket is used to go all the way to orbit, the payload fraction is very small. There are three main types of propellants: solid, liquid, and hybrid. Liquid fueled rockets have better specific impulse than solid rockets and are capable of being throttled, shut down, and restarted.

While there were many small rockets produced over the years for research and experimentation, the first modern model rocket, and more importantly, the model rocket engine, was designed in 1954 by Orville Carlisle, and his brother Robert. With the launch of Sputnik, many young people were trying to build their own rocket engines, often with tragic results. The Carlisles realized their engine design could be marketed and provide a safe outlet for a new hobby. They sent samples to Mr. Stine in January, Stine, a range safety officer at White Sands Missile Range, built and flew the models, and then devised a safety handbook for the activity based on his experience at the range. The American National Association of Rocketry was founded in 1957 to help promote not only the hobby, but to promote the safety of the activities related to model rocketry.
