Artemisaia Gentileschi Italian Baroque

Gentileschi was one of the first major Women Artists. Gentileschi was a Baroque painter who was greatly influenced by Caravaggio. The influence is apparent in her use of dark compositions and dramatic lighting.

Gentileschi was the daughter of an artist. She studied under her father and other artist. If not for her father she may have never had a chance to become an artist. It was not thought to be for women.

Like most art of the time Gentileschi’s paintings dealt with biblical themes. Notice the use of lighting and the dramatic action. Both elements of the Baroque style.
