Introduction Successful managers are aware of the ethical climate of the organization and strive to be an ethical leader within the organization. Corporate social responsibility involves consideration of the impact of an organization’s actions on legal, economic, ethical, and societal good-will factors. Managing diversity in the workplace is a critical issue, influenced by the increasing variety of differences characteristic of the modern worker.

Corporate Social Responsibility Ethical Responsibility – Meeting society’s ethical expectations. Legal Responsibility – Obeying the laws. Economic Responsibility – To create value for the customer by providing goods and services at a price that perpetuates the business and satisfies investors. Philanthropic Responsibilities – Additional behaviors that society finds desirable and that are congruent with the business’ values.

Models of Social Responsibility There are two models of social responsibility: the “economic” and the “socio-economic” model. The economic model of social responsibility holds that society will benefit most when business is left alone to produce and market profitable products that society needs. The socioeconomic model of social responsibility holds that managers have a responsibility not only to stockholders but also to customers, employees, suppliers, and the general public.

Business Ethics Defined: “Ethical standards are the generally accepted rules of conduct that govern society.” – Marianne Jennings Older views of the shareholders as the only group management has a duty to protect have been expanded to include many others under the stakeholder view. At its core, business ethics is about everyday honesty. While there are many philosophical ethics theories, at the heart of these is the Hippocratic oath of the Greek physician spelled out 2500 years ago: “Primum non nocere”: “Above all, not knowingly to do harm.”

Ethics is Not Law: Ethics Rises Above the Law! A practice may in fact be legal in a particular place and still be unethical! Examples: Sweatshops, child labor, unsafe working conditions, bribes, etc.

Ways that ethical decisions can be made End-result ethics is making decisions on the basis of expected results, and the greatest return on the investment or outcome. Rule ethics is making decisions on the basis of the legality. Social contract ethics is making decisions on the basis of the strategy and values of your organization. Personalistic ethics is making decisions on the basis of personal convictions and conscience.

Discuss the process of making ethical decisions

What is Corporate Sustainability? Economic growth that meets the organization’s present needs without harming the ability of future generations to meet their needs. “ The great fault of all ethics hitherto has been that they believed themselves to have to deal only with the relations of man to man. In reality, however, the question is what is his attitude to the world and all life that comes within his reach. A man is ethical only when life, as such, is sacred to him, and that of plants and animals as that of his fellow men, and when he devotes himself helpfully to all life that is in need of help. Only the universal ethic of feeling the responsibility in an ever-widening sphere for all that lives- only that ethic can be founded in thought….The ethic of Reverence for Life, therefore, comprehends within itself everything that can be described as love, devotion, and sympathy whether in suffering, joy, or effort. “ Albert Schweitzer, Out of My Life and Thought, An Autobiography, trans. C.T. Campion, chapter 13, p. 188 (1933).

What is diversity? Gender Age Religious affiliation Disability status Military experience Sexual orientation Educational level

Managing Diversity Involves recruiting, training, promoting, and utilizing to full advantage individuals with different backgrounds, beliefs, capabilities, and cultures. Understanding and deeply valuing employee differences to build a more effective and profitable organization. Valuing the connections that arise and develop between diverse employees.

Components of a Diversified Workforce

The Business Case for Diversity It is the ethical thing to do. It is in almost all cases the legal thing to do. It provides essential resources for the business. The facts are that businesses that embrace diversity are stronger and more competitive businesses. Those that hire based solely on the qualifications of the employee usually hire the better employee.

Any questions ?

What constitutes sexual harassment? Who is involved? Is it only verbal? What other means of sexual harassment might be used?

What is sexual harassment? Sexual Harassment is… Conduct of a sexual nature that has negative consequences for employment Two categories -Quid pro quo: submission to or rejection of sexual conduct is used as a basis for employment decision. -Hostile environment: when unwelcome sexual conduct “has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with job performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment.”

Components of a Sexual Harassment Policy 1.Develop a comprehensive organization-wide policy on sexual harassment and present it to all current and new employees. 2.Hold training sessions with supervisors to explain Title VII requirements, their role in providing an environment free of sexual harassment, and proper investigative procedures when charges occur.

Components of a Sexual Harassment Policy, cont’d. 3.Establish a formal complaint procedure in which employees can discuss problems without fear of retaliation. 4.Act immediately when employees complain of sexual harassment. 5.When an investigation supports employee charges, discipline the offender at once. 6.Follow up on all cases to ensure a satisfactory resolution of the problem.

Application of the process: Case study: A hospital had a sexual harassment policy that was strictly enforced. They also held all vendors to the same standard. One evening a vendor who was working at the hospital followed one of the employees to the parking lot and started harassing her in the hospital parking lot. What should the hospital do?
