Presentation transcript:

INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION IECRE Conformity Assessment System Kerry McManama Executive Secretary IECEE, IECRE

4 Types of Renewable Energy Sources Common sources include :  Solar – Photovoltaic (PV)  Solar – Thermal  Wind Power  Marine Energy  Hydro Energy  Geothermal  Biomass and biogas  Fuel Cells

Wind Energy 5

Solar Energy 6

Complex Marine Systems 7

Drivers for “Renewables” Growth:  Reduced dependency on fossil fuels  Carbon Dioxide emission reductions  Incentives (government and market based)  Large and increasing investments in:  Technology improvements  Performance  Reliability  Longevity  Costs reduction  Control and integration systems (Smart Grid)  Training in design, selection and installation

9 Obstacles to “Renewables” Growth:  Cost (capital, installation and maintenance)  Maturity of technology  Reliability and longevity of benefits  Installation and performance problems  Integration with existing energy supply networks  System component interoperability and compatibility  Linking generation capacity to consumption patterns (storage offers solutions in this area)  Adverse environmental impacts (wind farms)  Social opposition

Elements defining success 1. Broad industry representation a) End Users (owners, insurers, banks, authorities having jurisdiction, developers, Regulators) b) OEMs (turbine mfrs, major component suppliers, those using the certification process) c) Certification bodies accredited and approved to provide certification d) Test laboratories performing tests according IEC standards. 2. Recognition and buy-in of harmonized CA from a broad set of stakeholders

Benefits of Conducting Conformity Assessment thru IEC IEC Brand Global recognition - industry International recognition, eg WTO + UN IEC Reports and Certificates used Nationally Open and Transparent Process Clear Rules Transparency in process and results Industry have a say and provide direct input. Consistency in CA processes among participating Certification/Test Bodies
