Research paper Rough draft due 2/28/15 but may be turned in earlier for grading Must follow specific formatting: Typed Double spaced Size 12 font, times new roman Margins 0.5” all around 2-3 page minimum plus bibliography Do not add extra spaces between paragraphs or paragraph titles to make is appear longer Proper citations required to avoid plagiarism (will work on this in ELA classes) Bibliography completed in APA format required to receive credit.

Lab report Rough draft due 3/11/15 but may be turned in earlier for grading Lab reports should be completed using the scientific method format. Students have received a formatting sheet that must be followed. » List of materials » Hypothesis » Procedure list » Analyze and conclude Including all data table and results Even failed trials

Experiment All experiments conducted must be done by the student (s). They must follow safety precautions and have the lab report laid out before completing any tests. Hypothesis must be formed before test is done to be viable. Even if hypothesis is wrong you just record that in analyze and conclude.

Log Book Rough draft due 3/21/15 but may be turned in earlier for grading Formatting: Must be in a 3 ring binder with all important information Beginning should have a brief summary of experiment Does NOT include research paper or any pages printed off of the internet. Type most data to ensure neatness, as well as ease of judging All research should be re-written and properly cited, including bibliography Copy of lab report should be included, with all pictures of results as well as graphs and data tables Pictures should all be labeled. Any informed consent forms (if applicable)

Display guidelines Project board must fit into a 40” by 26” table space All items must be free standing, there is no wall space available. Tri fold project boards work perfectly. Access to electrical outlets is limited, so if needed, please bring a heavy duty 3 pronged extension cord.

Banned Items Anything that could be hazardous is prohibited from display at the Science Fair, including the following: – Live animals and poisonous plants – Pathogenic microbial agents (viruses, bacteria, fungi) – Hypodermic needles, syringes, razor blades, or other sharp items – Instruments containing mercury, even thermometers. (Use digital) – Glass bottles and lab ware, either empty or containing any substance – Drugs, over the counter medications, antibiotics, and vitamins – Vacuum systems – Explosive or highly toxic chemicals – Microwaves – Radio waves All power driven parts must be suitably guarded to prevent unauthorized use No open flame, torch, or burner in the display area. Robotics projects should have interlocks or other controls

Informed consent forms If any person is participating in your child’s science fair project in any way, (even an interview) they must complete the informed consent form. Available on my website, and handed out in class.

Science Fair Advisors New this year!! I have 8 th grade, NJHS volunteers to serve as science fair advisors during recess periods. Students will fill out help wanted forms and give them to me and I will assign them a student and a meeting time to address problems. If it is more complex I will address the problem myself.
