STARTER: Fill out the census pages...carefully!

QUESTIONS: 1.Were there any questions that you couldn’t answer? 2.Were there any questions that surprised you? Did you feel funny giving out such personal information? 3.Why do you think the government wants this information? What will they do with it? 4.What do you think happens to those people who refuse to fill out a census? 5.Who’s missing from census data? YOU CAN TAKE THIS SHEET WITH YOU – I’M NOT SURE I’M ALLOWED TO COLLECT SUCH INFORMATION ABOUT YOU SO WE WON’T PUT THIS IN OUR BOOKS!!!

Census data has been collected every 10 years since It was originally designed to check for overpopulation, but since then it has become more than just a ‘head count’. This year the census took place on the 27 th March. Did you see your copy? Watch this 14 minute video clip, taken from a programme shown on the eve of the 2011 census. It shows how the census is linked to our topic of migration.

HOMEWORK: You are going to spend two weeks of homeworks on a short report about Britons ‘born abroad’. You will now receive an instruction sheet and we’ll work through the task together to check that you understand.
