History of Censuses First official Census held in Malta in 1842 This year’s is the 17th Census The second since Malta joined the EU In 1240 a report by Abate Giliberto put population count at 1,119 In 1481 a census was conducted to record production and stocks of wheat/consumers In 1632, population was recorded at 51,750
Why is a Census held? Once-in-a-decade measure To obtain the number and characteristics of people living in the Maltese Islands on the Day To aid as a tool for policy makers, town planners, local councils, service providers, businesses To monitor changing trends in the demography and social aspects of the population Census will be held in all EU Member States
Legal basis Census Act 1948 Regulation (EC) 763/2008 of 9 July 2008 Malta Statistics Authority Act (XXIV of 2000) Completing the Census questionnaire is a legal requirement Confidentiality of personal information is safeguarded and guaranteed; disclosure is a criminal offence
Census Day Census Day will be Sunday 20 November 2011 Enumerators to visit all households between 7 November and 4 December Information should be correct as at the night of All persons resident in the Maltese Islands will be enumerated Call for applications for census enumerators issued today
Census logo and slogan Series of arrow-shaped houses grouped within one big house Stylised figures of people Houses are bar-charts and intersection of shapes creates zig-zag path reminiscent of charts Complex make-up of society represented by different colours
Scale of the Census Over 142,000 resident dwellings to be visited Vacant and second dwellings will be enumerated Institutional households also covered Around 1,000 enumerators to be recruited 40 local area networks organised in schools Budget of around €1.6 million
Road map Meetings with stakeholders, individuals, organisations, local councils Finalisation of questionnaire by end July Information campaign through the media Pilot study Mailing of questionnaires to all households Post-census survey Final data expected by Q1/2014 at the latest
