What is SBS? Infants are shaken violently Physical brain injury from shaking a baby excessively. Severe form of head injury that occurs when a baby is shaken forcibly enough to cause the baby's brain to rebound (bounce) against his or her skull.

How to Recognize SBS Changes in behavior, irritability, lethargy, loss of consciousness, pale or bluish skin Finger mark bruising on child’s chest, back, or shoulders Possibly broken, injured, or dislocated bones and injuries to the neck and spine

Effects of SBS Shaking can damage a child's brain. Shaking can cause permanent disabilities: blindness or paralysis. Shaking can even cause death.

Prevention of SBS Talk to a friend, family member, neighbor, or anyone else you trust, and get some support. If you feel you may hurt your baby, call for help: a local crisis line, your child welfare agency, or police.
