STRATEGY: Analyze Story Structure Story structure is the way a writer shows the characters, setting, and plot (events) in a story. Identifying the elements (parts) in a story and how they fit together helps you understand what is happening.

SKILL: Problem and Solution The problem in a story is what the main character wants to do, find out, or change The story ends when the character finds a solution, or a way to solve the problem.

PREVIEW & PREDICT When I say “Go”, take 1 minute to preview the illustrations. Ask yourself: – Will this story be funny? –Why or why not? On your index card, write your predictions. After we listen to the selection, we will see if your questions were answered.

FOCUS QUESTION Read to find out… –How does Elizabeth solve her problem? NOW…you will read along as we listen to….

THE PERFECT PET

Let’s Check our Predictions! Share with your criss-cross/shoulder partner your questions. Were they answered? Did you find out how Elizabeth solves her problem? TOMORROW WE WILL… –Use our “Problem and Solution Chart” to answer the Comprehension Check questions on page 141.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT…. If you could choose any pet in a pet store, which one would you choose. Why?
