Closing Remarks Frederick A. Harris Frederick A. Harris CLEOc and BESIII Joint Workshop Jan , 2004 Beijing, China

History Suggested by Panofsky at 2002 US/PRC meeting: Charm physics after CLEOc? Can BESIII address this physics? BES tried to plan a meeting for June Marvin Goldberger visits IHEP. Excited by BESIII and suggests international cooperation. Joint workshop discussed at CLEOc workshop (June 03). Work began on CLEOc/BESIII joint workshop. Much of it by Ian Shipsey and David Cassel. First CLEOc - BESIII collaborative effort.

Joint Workshop Good turn out. Participation by theorists and from other experiments. Many, many interesting topics to explore.

4 BESIII/CLEO-c Workshop 1/13/03 Ian Shipsey The potential to observe new forms of matter- glueballs & hybrids, and new physics D mixing/CPV/rare provides a discovery component to the program Knowledge of absolute charm branching fractions is now contributing significant errors to measurements involving beauty quarks. CLEO-c can also resolve this problem in a timely fashion Improved Knowledge of CKM elements, which is now not very good. CLEO-c Physics Impact VcdVcsVcbVubVtdVts 7%16%5%15%36%39% 1.7%1.6%3% 5% B Factory/Tevartron Data & CLEO-c Lattice Validation CLEO-c data and LQCD PDG

Joint Workshop Many excellent talks and ideas. Bright future for threshold tau-charm physics. Workshop a great success. Consensus to hold future workshops.

6 BESIII/CLEO-c Workshop 1/13/03 Ian Shipsey How can we optimize physics output of BES/CLEO? C omplementarity: higher  s …..lower  s few fb -1 …. few 10’s fb -1 brief time span … open-ended starting now….. starting later no , no K L, …. , K L (?) General thoughts to initiate discussion… C ooperation: Physics Workshops Technical workshops (IR) Visiting physicist programs Development of common tools C ommunity: Belle, Babar,… Joint working groups Common approach to conference organizers C ompetition: drives new ideas… C onfirmation: exotic signals, precision measurements

Future relationship CLEOc/BESIII Competitors or collaborators? Time scales very different CLEOcBES  ″ run, install more wigglers D S physics run J/  run ? – data analysis ? BESII Continuum running SR running BEPCII installation BESIII installation Commissioning Physics

Cooperation/collaboration Manpower a problem. Need to find ways to help each other. Identify common problems. Workshops and visits. Communication important. QWG?
