Be sure to pick up your handout as soon as you enter. Get seated quickly at one of the desks that corresponds to the card you were given as you entered. I reserve the right to switch you if the cards are in your favor! Yes, we really are working today, so please be a willing participant. Here’s what you need today: * Writing utensil * Looseleaf & orange Think-Tac-Toe sheet (Vocab. notes) **Pick up a copy of “My Papa’s Waltz” from under basket at your desks. This needs to be read, annotated, and completed for tomorrow.

I can reflect on my test performance to determine what skills I need to improve and create an action plan to help further guide my learning.

 I can distinguish between nuances in word meaning.

 They are ramps between antonyms.  They show relationships between adjectives or adverbs. (They are not used with nouns or verbs.) With your partner, sort the words in the clear plastic bags from: Most positive Most negative *Use hint from above to help; be ready to defend your array. your array.

compassionate gentle unkind cruel spiteful compassionate gentle unkind cruel spiteful Most positive Most negative What do all of these words describe? Which of these words use a word part we’ve already discussed?

With your partner, sort the words in the evelope (Ex. 2) from: Most positive Most negative *Use hint from above to help; be ready to defend your array. your array.

benevolent caring benign malicious malevolent Most positive Most negative What do all of these words describe? Which of these words uses a word part we’ve already discussed?

 I thought about one of my words from Step 3.  malevolent  Remember: mal =bad

 Identify an antonym. I may have to look up the meaning. I use dictionaries and thesauri to gather words that discuss the same topic. I then examine their denotations and connotations to create an array, or range of meaning. Agreeable; good-hearted Displaying concern towards others Intending harm against others

On an index card, record the following: 1. One thing you must remember in constructing your linear array. 2. Two steps you will do to start building your own array with words from Cycle 3.

 Read and annotate My Papa’s Waltz (Must be completed by Thursday)  Continue working on your extended metaphor poem (Rough draft due Friday!)  Work on Cycle 3 linear arrays. (You need 2!) * At least 5 words of which one word must contain a Cycle 3 word part!  Study Cycle 3 Word parts for upcoming quiz early next week. (We’ve been in this cycle a while; it’s time!)
