Presentation By: Online patient narratives, a valuable resource to help cultivate compassion among healthcare professionals Maggie Bennett & Deborah Coleman 16 th Healthcare Interdisciplinary Research Conference 2015

 Introduction  Defining compassion  Compassionate Healthcare  Nurse Education in the UK  Impact of the use of online patient narratives with second year nursing students Content overview

Cultivating compassion through analysis of online patient narratives

Compassion Complex, contested and value laden concept (Mannion, 2014)

Compassion ‘ a deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with a wish to relieve it’ ( Chochinov, 2007) ‘ a response to vulnerability in others’ (Dewar, 2011)

Compassion This can only be achieved if those in the caring professions listen and learn from patient experiences, to connect with their humanity and individuality (Berwick,2013)

Nurse Education Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for nurse education Three year BSc Nursing programme. Service user involvement a necessity in developing the curriculum

Teaching and learning strategies 1.Blended learning approach, lectures, tutorials, practicals, simulation and online resources 2.Small group teaching (approx 15 students) 3.Enquiry based learning facilitated by care studies

Dr. Kate Granger A doctor & terminally ill cancer patient musing about life & death

Impact and student feedback 1.Patient experience became central to the care study discussion 2.Students identified the vulnerability and hidden suffering of the patient experience 3.Facilitated in depth discussion of compassionate care 4.Increased awareness and engagement with patient online narratives

More questions than answers and some thoughts 1.ePatients have an important contribution to make in ‘shaping care ’ and cultivating compassion. 2. Why are they such an underutilised resource in nurse education? 3.How can we harness patient narratives? 4.How can we evaluate the impact of patient narratives in education?
