TYPES OF SEISMIC WAVES.
 Waves of energy that travel through the earth after rock has been elastically deformed 1. The crust layer is stressed and begins to deform 2. If the.
Do Now Question Why do you think the areas in pink and red have the highest earthquake risk?
Seismic waves and the shadow zone.  Sudden release of energy in the Earth’s crust and creates seismic waves. Occurs naturally or human induced.

What causes an earthquake?  Deformation- the change in shape of rock in response to stress  Elastic Rebound- Return of rock to its original undeformed.
What are Seismic Waves?. Types of Waves: Seismic Waves We will be covering: Body Waves Primary or p-wave Primary or p-wave –Compression wave Secondary.
Earthquakes!. Seismic Waves General Info  Seismic waves are the energy released when rocks break along faults.  Focus = the point within the Earth’s.
Earthquakes!. How does an earthquakes form?  Forces inside the earth put stress on the rocks near plate edges. Stress cause rocks to bend and stretch.
Earthquake Ground shaking caused by the sudden and rapid movement of one block of rock slipping past another along fractures in Earth’s crust called FAULTS.
Chapter 19.  Most Earthquakes are the result of movement in the Earth’s crust at the tectonic plates.  Rocks in the crust resist movement and build.

Presentation transcript:

 The fastest of all seismic waves.  Body wave – travels through the interior of the Earth.  Travels through solids and liquids.  It squeezes and stretches rock as it moves through it.  Nicknamed the “push- pull” wave.  The least powerful wave.

 The 2 nd fastest seismic wave.  Body wave – travels through the interior of the Earth.  Travels only through solids.  It pushes rock side to side as it snakes through it.  It is the 2 nd most powerful seismic wave.

 The slowest of all seismic waves.  Surface wave – travels only along the surface of the Earth.  It causes rock to move like ocean waves.  The most powerful wave –it causes the most damage.
