Session Planning and Session Feedback

Aim and Objectives  Aim is to discuss and agree approaches to planning a successful session and providing effective feedback  Objectives:Why, When and How to plan a session  How to plan a session effectively  Responding to the unexpected during a session  Understanding the importance of feedback  How to deliver effective feedback

Why should we plan a session?  Ensures that we meet the agreed learning/assessment outcome  Ensures that we have planned and have required resources to deliver an effective session  Ensures that we provide a positive learning/assessment experience for all of our learners  Ensures regular progress against overall aim of the qualification  Ensures that we meet the needs of the individual learners

What do you need to consider when planning a session?  When the session is going to occur  Time – the length of the session  Resources that will be required  Learning Styles  Additional Needs  When/how you are going to inform the learner about the session plan  How will embed Functional Skills and Equality and Diversity

5 Minute Lesson Plan

Session/Lesson Planning  Overall Objective – overall outcome you wish to meet  Engagement – how are you going to ensure the learner is engaged  Stickability – how are you going to check that it “Sticks”  Differentiation – how are you going to ensure you are meeting the individual needs of the group  Words – what key words are you going to impart  AFL – Additional Further Learning

Responding to the Unexpected How would you cope with the following:  One learner being late to a session you have agreed with three other students attending  Arriving at the session to be informed that you only have half the planned time for the session  Learner becoming disengaged/distracted during the session  Learner completely confused with subject area/assessment criteria

Session Feedback – Why should we provide feedback?  Celebrates achievement  Confirmation that assessment/lesson activity has been achieved and that a check (formal/informal) has been made against the outcome  Identifies areas where the learner can develop skills further

What is the difference between advice and feedback?  Feedback: noun – (3) a reaction or response to a particular process or activity  Synonyms include: observation, retaliation, assessment, evaluation, criticism, sentiment and comeback.  Advice: noun – (1) an opinion or recommendation offered as a guide to action, conduct, etc.: I shall act on your advice.  Synonyms include: recommendation, encouragement, consultation, information, instruction and proposition.

How can we provide Effective Feedback?  Goal-Referenced  Tangible and Transparent  Actionable  Timely  User-Friendly  Consistent

Recording Feedback Effectively  Be descriptive and specific  Record areas where learner has met the required areas in a positive manner  Identify areas where learner could expand further clearly  Identify resources/support available that could help develop skills and experience  Clearly document your feedback and check that it makes sense!  Provide feedback as quickly as possible
