HOMEWORK AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Chapter 2 Discussion will continue on Thursday Due Today Chapter 2 Outline Due Today Video Worksheet: Exotic Invaders: Pythons in the Everglades Documentary Field Trip Forms

HUMAN EVOLUTION Constantly changing field of study First Seriously considered after Darwin published On the Origin of Species in 1859 Less than 10 years later - First fossilized hominin remains found Homo heidelbergensis - Discovered in France 50 years later (1924) -First Australopithecine fossil discovered in South Africa 50 more years pass (1974) -Lucy, Australopithecus afarensis found in Ethiopia Today - 20 different hominin species have been found - Evidence has been found linking Homo sapiens with Neanderthals (living near or with each other) DNA sequences showing close relation

Homo heidelbergensis Australopithecus afarensis “Lucy” Neanderthals

People living in north Florida made some of the most beautiful ceramics ever created by North American Indians. This culture was called Weedon Island (A.D. 250 to 750) which was named for an archaeological site on Tampa Bay. Ceramics were used in burial rituals. The effigy vessels are more like sculpture than pottery. In this painting I wanted to show the spirituality of making sacred pottery by putting the potter in an environment of pure peace and beauty.

With this painting I wanted the viewer to experience the incredible beauty of south Florida and understand the rich marine resources available for this young boy. His face is based on my conception of Florida Indians as somewhere between the sharper angular face of North America Indians and the smoother faces of the South American Indians. I've contrasted his smooth brown skin with the intense light of the background.

This painting uses realistic objects to create a colorful design composition. The native populations of Florida were totally dependent on their environment. The girl represents all the early Indians that have vanished from Florida.

A Jeaga maiden greets a familiar Florida scrub jay. Both their worlds encompass only a few miles. Scrub jays live tribally in families of up to eight birds. They cooperate in all aspects of family life. This painting demonstrates the closeness of the Jeaga and their environment. Water is a life-giving thing and is scarce in the Florida scrub environment inhabited by the scrub jay and the maiden. I used dull colors in the background to create a calm and mysterious moment.

A Jeaga maiden greets a familiar Scrub Jay. Both their worlds encompass only a few miles. Like a tribe, Scrub Jays live in families of up to eight birds and cooperate in food gathering, watching for enemies, and even feeding babies. This painting shows the close spiritual connection the Florida Indians had with their environment. Copper and glass beads were used by the Spanish for trade.
