Basic Facts (cont.): Where he was born: Pisa, Italy Family: He was the first of six children. His parents were Vincenzo Galilei and Giulia Ammannati. Galileo did not have a wife, but he had a long term relationship with Maria Gamba. They had three children, Virginia, Livia, and Vincenzo.

Education & later life Where he went to college: University of Pisa How he would think of astronomy today: He would be fulfilled of how his inventions, compasses, and telescopes revolutionized astronomy and biology. Why Galileo was “wanted”: Galileo was a very important astronomer and physicist from his first discovery of the fulcrum in 1593 to 1609 when he made his biggest mark on history by inventing the telescope. He also proved the Copernican System (the Earth along with other planets rotate around the sun) which changed our perspective on the universe today.

Inventions & Work The telescope: Galileo was among the first to use a refracting telescope to observe the stars, and the first to use a microscope to observe biological structures. He did not invent the telescope, but he did improve the magnification of it and revised it to be better. Where he worked: He taught at the University of Padua and that is where he did the majority of his work. Other jobs: Galileo was a physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher. He was a mathematics teacher at the University of Padua.
