REVIEW FOR EXAM 1 YOU HAVE QUIZZES & COPIES OF PPT CHAPTERS 1,2,3, & 4

ABOUT COMMUNICATIONS WHAT IS THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS? WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS BREAK DOWN THE MOST AT SCHOOL? AT HOME? BETWEEN FRIENDS? WHAT CAUSES THE MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND/OR MISCOMMUNICATIONS?

COMMUNICATION BARRIERS FILTERING (DISTORTION OR WITHHOLDING OF INFORMATION) UNPOPULAR MESSAGE…DON’T KILL THE MESSENGER IS THERE A CULTURE OF “NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS?” ARE BOTH SENDER AND RECEIVER OBJECTIVE OR DO THEY HAVE EMOTIONAL BONDS TO THE MESSAGE OR MESSENGER SELECTIVE PERCEPTION DEFINE INFORMATION OVERLOAD/THE GRAPEVINE/SEMANTICS/JARGON

IMPROVE YOUR LISTENING SKILLS LISTEN TO THE MESSAGE CONTENT LISTEN FOR FEELINGS RESPOND TO FEELINGS NOTE ALL CUES PARAPHRASE AND RESTATE

DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMMUNICATIONS AND CHANNELS 3 TYPES OF COMMUNICATIONS NORMALLY VERBAL COMMUNICATION TAKES PLACE IN REAL TIME. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION CAN EVOLVE OVER LONGER PERIODS OF TIME, IT CAN BE A TEAM EFFORT OR A JOINT EFFORT. TYPICALLY VERBAL COMMUNICATIONS CONVEY FEELINGS, WHILE WRITTEN COMMUNICATION CONVEY FACTS. NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION IS CRITICAL TO GETTING YOUR MESSAGE ACROSS OR MAKING A FAVORABLE FIRST IMPRESSION

NONVERBAL COMMUNICATIONS BODY LANGUAGE EYE CONTACT FACIAL EXPRESSIONS POSTURE TOUCH SPACE

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE VERBAL COMMUNICATION AND WHEN SHOULD YOU USE WRITTEN COMMUNICATION? written Conveying facts There needs to be a permanent record There is little time urgency verbal Conveying emotions or feelings The message does not need to be permanent There is time urganecy

SAYING IT SO, MAKES IT SO BELIEVING IT SO, MAKES IT SO REMEMBER THE TED TALK?. PRACTICE WHAT YOU WANT TO CONVEY IN AN INTERVIEW. SEE YOURSELF AS SUCCESSFUL. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE

CHAPTER 3 MORE REVIEW WHAT ID THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERSON /JOB FIT AND PERSON/ORGANIZATION FIT WHAT ARE SOME TERMINAL VALUES AND INSTRUMENTAL VALUES. WERE YOU SURPRISED AT ALL WITH YOUR RANKINGS? WHAT ARE SOME GENERATIONAL DIFFERENCES? WHAT ARE THE BIG 5 PERSONALITY TRAITS?

MORE ABOUT PERSONALITY TRAITS THE MYERS BRIGGS TYPE INDICATOR IS VERY POPULAR TO USE FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE AFFECTIVE PEOPLE. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF HAVING EACH IN YOUR TEAM OR WORK GROUP? WHAT ARE CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH SELF MONITORS VERSES LOW SELF MONITORS?

PERCEPTION “PERCEPTION IS THE PROCESS WITH WHICH INDIVIDUALS DETECT AND INTERPRET ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULI REMEMBER “OLD LADY YOUNG LADY” KNOW THE TERMS RELATED TO SELF PERCEPTION SUCH AS SELF EFFACEMENT BIAS/SELF ENHANCEMENT BIAS/ FALSE CONSENSUS ERROR KNOW HOW WE PERCEIVE OTHERS IN OUR ENVIRONMENT IS THE TERMS RELATED TO SOCIAL PERCEPTION ( SUCH AS STEREOTYPES; SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY, SELECTIVE PERCEPTION, FIRST IMPRESSIONS)

WHAT CAN WE DO TO MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION IN THE JOB INTERVIEW? RESUME IS SENT TO THE RIGHT PEOPLE, SPELL THEIR NAMES CORRECTLY. EDIT YOUR RESUME TO MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO MISTAKES OR TYPO’S BE PREPARED FOR THE INTERVIEW RESEARCH THE COMPANY WHEN YOU ARE INVITED FOR AN OFFICE INTERVIEW, MAKE SURE YOU DRESS APPROPRIATELY BE ON TIME TO THE INTERVIEW. DURING THE INTERVIEW, BE POLITE.

ATTRIBUTIONS AN ATTRIBUTION IS THE EXPLANATION OR REASON WE GIVE FOR WHY PEOPLE BEHAVE AS THEY DO OR YOU OR THEY RECEIVE THE OUTCOMES YOU RECEIVE. IF YOU BELIEVE THAT THE REASON YOU DID WELL ON AN EXAM, YOU CAN THINK: A. IT IS BECAUSE I STUDIED HARD OR B. BECAUSE I ALWAYS DO WELL ON EXAMS. OR C. THE EXAM WAS EASY OR D. I WAS JUST LUCKY. EFFORT (STUDY HARD) AND DOING WELL (ABILITY) ARE INTERNAL ATTRIBUTIONS AN EASY EXAM OR LUCK ARE EXTERNAL ATTRIBUTIONS

AN ETHICAL DILEMMA YOU ARE APPLYING FOR THE JOB OF SALES ASSOCIATE. YOU HAVE JUST FOUND OUT THAT YOU WILL BE GIVEN A PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT AS PART OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS. YOU FEEL THAT HIS JOB REQUIRES SOMEONE WHO IS VERY HIGH IN EXTRAVERSION AND SOMEONE WHO CAN HANDLE STRESS WELL. YOU ARE RELATIVELY SOCIABLE AND CAN COPE WITH SOME STRESS BUT HONESTLY YOU ARE NOT VERY HIGH IN EITHER TRAIT. THE JOB PAYS WELL AND IT IS A GREAT STEPPING STONE TO BETTER JOBS. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO RESPOND WHEN COMPLETING THE PERSONALITY QUESTIONNAIRE? ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE AN EFFORT TO REPRESENT YOURSELF AS HOW YOU TRULY ARE? IF SO, THERE IS A CHANCE THAT YOU MAY NOT GET THE JOB? HOW ABOUT ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS TO FIT THE SALESPERSON PROFILE? ISN’T EVERYONE DOING THIS TO SOME EXTENT ANYWAY?

CHAPTER 4 INDIVIDUAL ATTITUDES & BEHAVIORS JOB SATISFACTION 90% OF EMPLOYEES SURVEYED WERE AT LEAST SOMEWHAT SATISFIED WITH THEIR WORK AND 40 % WERE VERY SATISFIED ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT IS THE EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT SOMEONE HAS WITH THEIR ORGANIZATION WHAT CONTRIBUTES TO BOTH OF THESE ATTITUDES? PERSONALITY/PERSON ENVIRONMENT FIT/PSYCHOLOGICAL CONTRACT/ ORGANIZATIONAL JUSTICE/WORK RELATIONSHIPS/STRESS/ WORK-LIFE BALANCES

OUTCOMES ASSOCIATED ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT AND JOB SATISFACTION PEOPLE ARE LESS LIKELY TO LEAVE THEIR JOBS, BE LATE FOR WORK, OR ABSENT IF THEY ARE ENGAGED IN THE WORKPLACE ALSO THERE TENDS TO BE GREATER CUSTOMER LOYALTY, PROFITABILITY, AND SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE ORGANIZATIONAL CITIZENS BEHAVIOR (OCB) ARE VOLUNTARY BEHAVIORS EMPLOYEES PERFORM TO HELP OTHERS AND BENEFIT THE ORGANIZATION
