Summary Characteristics of Models of Good Practice for Single Mothers and Elderly Women

Inclusion & Empowerment Good practice includes recipients as partners in developing services that address personalized needs within a specified time frame This approach empowers recipients to be more self-sufficient and assume more responsibility for themselves

Holistic (Systemic) Approach Good practice recognizes the multiple needs of a recipient even if the agency can provide assistance for only one or two of those needs

Recipient as a Resource Good practice views the recipient as a resource who is capable of helping herself and of accessing informal support systems with assistance from the agency Professionals are facilitators in this process - not controllers

Case Management A case management approach helps the recipient develop personal skills and utilizes formal and informal supports Case management reduces the likelihood of fraud and duplication of services

Transparent Information Good practice provides transparent and clear information about:  Recipients’ rights and responsibility  The agency’s role  Personalized planning based on input from applicant during the needs assessment process

Building Community Good practice provides services to an individual that are also an asset to the community  Helping an individual obtain employment with skill training and child care is an asset to the community, the local economy, and to civil society

Building Community Good practice engages mothers and children in community activities which is vital to building trust and social capital

Building Community Good practice actively engages a broad spectrum of community individuals and agencies through  Inclusion on agency boards  Volunteer opportunities  Fund raising

Transparency & Accountability Good practice is transparent and accountable through:  Involvement of many people in service delivery (case management)  Independent program evaluation  Diversity on boards of directors  Accountable funding  Public access to program data

Final Points Good practice is about:  Inclusiveness  Empowerment  Trust
