Changes in Georgia

University of Georgia After war education and religion became important 1784: General Assembly set aside 40,000 acres for the University of Georgia. This land was not used for the school. 1785: Abraham Baldwin wrote the charter. All people, not just wealthy men would have a right to education.

First University established by a state government 1801: John Milledge purchased land and donated it to be used as land for UGA. UGA is located in Athens, Georgia.

Georgia’s Capital 1785: Augusta becomes capital Within a year legislature wants the capital moved to a central location. 1796: Louisville becomes capital.

Georgia’s Capitals Problems with Louisville: 20 miles from an Indian trading post called Galphinton Louisville was name for France’s King that helped the colonies during the American Revolution 1806: Milledgeville is now capital

Churches Churches were damaged or destroyed during the Revolutionary War Many ministers were loyalist and left the colonies. The remaining ministers refused to recognize the King of England as the head of the church and started the Methodist Church There are a great deal of Baptist churches already in the colonies.

Churches 1783: Governor Lyman Hall asks citizens to rebuild churches More Baptists and Methodists churches are built South Carolina and Georgia Baptist make decisions together until now. Georgia breaks away and becomes independent in the late 1780’s.

Churches 1788: First Colored Baptist Church is established in Savannah. This church was controlled completely by it’s members Slaves typically went to their masters church or had to worship where their master allowed.
