Biography Real name: Tommaso di Giovanni di Simone Cassai. Born on December 21 st 1401 in Castel San Giovanni di Valdarno. An Important Florentine painter of the early renaissance. Helped create many of the major conception and stylistic foundations of western painting. One of the 1 st artists to use a vanishing point in his work.

A Few Paintings

Holy Trinity (1428) One of the first to use perspective to suggest depth in a flat surface.

Expulsion from Eden (1427) The heavy brush and thick shading give quality human looks.

The Tribute money (1427) First artist since classical antiquity to paint cast shadows. Tells a story.

San Giovenale Triptych (1422) One of his first works. Found at the end of World War 2. Does not depict techniques later used by Massacio.

Virgin and child (1426) Vanishing point. Sense of depth with the angels in the back. Size ratio of Mary and Jesus is spot on.
