What is a Filibuster? Filibuster: A person who wages an unofficial war on a country. They acted for their own benefits and did not carry out the plan of any government.
Significant Filibusters Phillip Nolan– from the U.S. and was sent to Texas with Spanish approval. Spain became suspicious of his activities (creating maps) and killed him. Jose Bernardo Gutierrez (Jose Gutierrez de Lara)- first Governor of Mexican Texas Augustus Magee Dr. James Long Jose Gutierrez de Lara-
Gutierrez-Magee Expedition Jose Bernardo Gutierrez (first Governor of Mexican Texas) and Augustus Magee organized the Republic of the north and proclaimed Texas free from Spain, but were defeated. Expedition encouraged others.
Long Expedition Dr. James Long led a group from Mississippi to Nacogdoches & declared Texas independent from Spain. Murdered in Mexico City.
Battle of Medina Fought August 18, 1813, along the Medina River south of San Antonio between Gutierrez-Magee expedition and Spanish royalist army. Republican army lost, but it encouraged others to enter the revolution.
Mexican Federal Constitution of 1824 Written after Mexico’s independence from Spain The republic took the name of United Mexican States, and was defined as a representative federal republic with Catholicism as the official religion. Created the state of Coahuila y Tejas, merging the two provinces.
State Colonization Law of 1825 Set the guidelines to the colonization of Coahuila y Texas Allowed Stephen F. Austin & other empresarios to receive land grants in Texas

Slavery in Texas 1821- Can bring slaves to Texas; Free Blacks are citizens & can own land 1823- Sale or purchase of slaves forbidden. Offspring of slaves were freed at 14 1827- Introduction of new slaves outlawed. Offspring of slaves free at birth 1829- Slavery abolished (ended) in Mexico 1830- importation of slaves outlawed in Texas
