Presentation transcript:

MAYAS CIVILIZATION The Maya civilization lived in three different areas: the southern Maya highlands, the central lowlands, and the northern lowlands. They had many different types of land, including mountains and dry plains. The area covered what we now call the southern Mexican states of Chiapas and Tabasco, and the Yucatán Peninsula states of Quintana Roo, Campeche and Yucatán. They also included where we now call Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and western Honduras.

MAYA CULTURE AND RELIGION The Maya believed in many Gods such as a Sun God, a Moon God, And a Maize God. Each God was believed to control a different aspect of daily life. On special occasions the Maya made human sacrifices, they used prisoners captured in battle offering their hearts to stone carvings of the Gods.

MAYAS ACHIEVEMENTS Mayas made impressive advances in science. They built large observatories from which people could study the sky, so their priests could watch the stars and plan the best times for religious festivals.

CALENDAR The Maya developed two calendars, one with 365 days guided farming activities, such as planting and harvesting, this calendar was more accurate than the one used in Europe at that time.

CALENDAR The Maya also had a separate 260 day calendar that they used for keeping track of religious events.

NUMBER AND WRITING SYSTEM They created a number system that helped them make complex calculations. They were the first people with a symbol for zero.

WRITING SYSTEM The Maya also developed a writing system , anthropologists Or scholars who study people and cultures have figured out that symbols used in Maya writing represented both objects and sounds.
