MODIS Science Team: Parting Thoughts Paula Bontempi National Aeronautics and Space Administration HQ MODIS/VIIRS Science Team Meeting January 2010

Terra and Aqua – Instrument or Measurement Teams Additional detailed guidance for the Instrument and Science Measurement Teams are provided in program element. Proposed studies may be relevant to more than one team. Proposals should request membership on the team that, to the best of their knowledge, is most relevant to their research (No exclusion). Measurement Teams Solicited: 3.1 Land Measurements Team (LCLUC) 3.2. Ocean Biology & Biogeochemistry Measurements Team (OCRT) 3.3 Cryospheric Sciences Measurement Team 3.4 Atmospheric Science Measurement Team 3.5 Geodynamics and Geohazards Research Team 3.6 Biodiversity and Ecological Forecasting Team 3.7 Sea Surface Temperature Science Team

MODIS-Relevant ROSES Competitions ROSES 2009 A.41 - The Science of Terra and Aqua –Follow on from the 2006 NASA Research Announcement Earth System Science Research using Data and Products from Terra, Aqua and ACRIMSAT Satellites (NNH06ZDA001N-EOS in ROSES-2006) –use of data and derived products from Terra and Aqua and their sensors –NOIs , Proposals Due ROSES 2009 A.24 Remote Sensing Theory –Theoretical algorithm advances - research to develop fundamental advances to radiative transfer theory and calculations –Data "fusion“ - research to develop new approaches for integrative analysis of disparate data sets –Advanced corrections - research to develop improved approaches and/or algorithms for correcting satellite data in order to take into account known confounding effects –Proposals due ; Five topics, two other calls anticipated for 2010 (uncertainties and NPP)

Noteworthy Issues Modifications to A.41 coming today to address international PIs, utility of Terra and Aqua “dead” sensors and components (e.g., SWIR on ASTER, HSB) Missions to Measurement effort – will take some dialogue to evolve, feedback welcome, and suggested cycles by which to meet (off cycle with sensor teams, etc.) Data Product/ATBD reviews – format for executing reviews, proposals to Terra and Aqua A.41 should be considering the requirements and schedule as needed More interdisciplinary algorithm development approaches, Terra/Aqua intersensor science Certain algorithm developers and validation investigators should address important deficiencies in key data products Algorithm developers need to represent broader community needs - work with them Algorithm refinement PIs need to provide compelling justification for the importance/utility of the algorithm improvements and/or new data products + plan for transition to core production (infusion of new knowledge) MODIS website – update/coordinate w/discipline leads, team leader, project and program scientists Sync of the Senior Review process and Terra and Aqua competition, as well as extension of Senior Review process to three years MODIS to VIIRS continuity issues – document issues in white papers Costing – start dates
