Exporting Famine Northern China produces one quarter of world wheat –worst drought for 60 years Continuing drought, like Russia last year? Would poor Chinese starve?? No! Over 2 trillion dollars reserves → import replacements → astronomical prices 3 billion poor < 2 dollars a day starve Most incomes spent on food – global depression

Food security and mitigation Switch to low till conservation agriculture and agroforestry Reduce oil based inputs, GHG emissions Reduce meat consumption Cost effective with rising oil prices Increase resistance to extreme weather Sequester carbon – 1 tonne per hectare
