How local councils are financed
Local Government Finance Local governments receive their money from many sources: Revenue Grant Council Tax Charges Business Rates
1. Revenue Grant This is money they receive from the Scottish Parliament. The amount of money they receive is decided by the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth – John Swinney
2. Council Tax Each house is given a band from A to H. Band A is the lowest tax band and band H is the highest. Bands are decided by the size of the house, facilities and local amenities Full-time students and people under the age of 18 do not pay council tax. People living on their own get a 25% council discount.
3. Charges Councils are able to provide services by charging for them. For example, if you live in a council house your parent/ carers will pay rent every month. If your library books are overdue, you will pay a small fine for each day they are late. People pay to use the leisure centres e.g. the gym, swimming pool etc.
