Breakout Session 2.2: A sustainable GEO Information System of Systems Chair: Lorenzo Bigagli Rapporteur: Greg Yetman
Data Citation: DOI-Enabling GEOSS Discovery and Access (David Arctur) DataCite Metadata and ISO DOIs (Digital Object Identifier): permanent identifiers; datacite.org is supporting the use of DOIs for datasets – Reference to a data citation – String that resolves to a permanent, workable service (stored registry) – Location of the data can change (i.e., new institution) but not the DOI
Data Citation: DOI-Enabling GEOSS Discovery and Access (David Arctur) How can GEOSS evolve to handle linked data? DataCite (global citation framework for data): – 22 members globally, 8 associates – Issue DOIs for datasets – library services: search for data, link to ORCID— registry of researchers – Can link to external Metadata for user extensions (additional information)
Metadata DOI has lightweight elements for data citation (not ISO 19115) Does GEOSS take advantage of DOIs? – DOI not searchable in Metadata DataCite Archive Interoperability with GEOSS (harvest DOIs from the registry) Mapped subset of fields between DataCite and ISO 19115
Results 2,500 (of 5M) records harvested from DataCite’s registry as a test – Available in a test instance of the GEO DAB – Same dataset registered in DataCite and in GEOSS but without the DOI in GEOSS
Mapping DataCite to ISO & INSPIRE metadata profile Almost all DataCite elements can easily be mapped to ISO – Mapping is not complete (yet) Also mapping to ORCID, Dublin Core
Next Steps… GEO architecture changes to support DOI linking? – DOI as a search qualifier – Create DOIs for data with no other ID in the Portal? Metadata profile? (GEOSS-INSPIRE) Coordination (GEOSS as an affiliate member?) – Issue of cost – Possibly through other memberships (RDA, EarthCube)
General Discussion GEOSS likely to coordinate via RDA for now What’s the connection between CrossRef and DataCite? – Friendly collaborators – Complimentary roles CrossRef does journal articles; DataCite does datasets Given that you can link to external metadata, why is a crosswalk required? – Community convention for consistent use of INSPIRE Metadata
