TERN & the Ecoinformatics Facility Who Are We? DOI’s Within TERN Ecoinformatics

Our Products ÆKOS (Australian Ecological Knowledge and Observation System) SHaRED (Submission, Harmonisation and Retrieval of Ecological Data) Soils2Satellites DOI’s Within TERN Ecoinformatics

Why Do We Create DOI’s? Easy and persistent access to research data Permanent link to data submitted to TERN Eco-informatics AEKOS via SHaRED Permanent link to downloads created for extract in Soils2Satellites What does this help our users with? Creation/management/identification of new collections - S2S Simplifying discovery, retrieval and download of data from our applications DOI’s Within TERN Ecoinformatics

Unusable Locked Up Re-collected TERN AusPlots SHaRED/ÆKOS - Vast array of important ecological data sets, which have become: DOI’s Within TERN Ecoinformatics

USER completes questionnaire (all modes) USER attaches data file (B & B+ only) USER defines key columns (B+ only) USER makes submission (all modes) SHaRED DATA ANALYST reviews submission SHaRED DATA ANALYST publishes to AEKOS or rejects it USER completes questionnaire USER attaches data file(s) USER makes submission SHaRED DATA ANALYST reviews submission SHaRED DATA ANALYST publishes to AEKOS and DOI Minted How Does SHaRED Work?DOI’s Within TERN Ecoinformatics

DOI Generation - TERN Ecoinformatics DOI’s Within TERN Ecoinformatics

USER completes questionnaire (all modes) USER attaches data file (B & B+ only) USER defines key columns (B+ only) USER makes submission (all modes) SHaRED DATA ANALYST reviews submission SHaRED DATA ANALYST publishes to AEKOS or rejects it User Searches For Data Sites User Reviews Data Via Visualisation Tools User Selects/Builds Extract List User Extracts New Data Collection S2S has a DOI Minted for a new data collection RIF-CS Collection Record Provided to ANDS How Does S2S Work DOI’s Within TERN Ecoinformatics

TERN Eco-informatics has developed a DOI Minting Client that interfaces with the TERN Central DOI Minting Service API. Crosswalks between SHaRED meta-information model and the DataCite Resource schema Generates the Resource XML definition Securely posts an xml document to the DOI Minting service, including a home landing page URL Receives a DataCite DOI, which is included with the SHaRED/ÆKOS or S2S data/metadata collection records How Do We Generate DOI’s DOI’s Within TERN Ecoinformatics

How to address data being continually updated? Should all ÆKOS data extracts automatically receive a DOI? How can a DOI link back to the originating portal? Issues DOI’s Within TERN Ecoinformatics

In common with many other national and international initiatives such as DataONE ( in the US, TERN Eco-informatics is concerned with the ongoing management of the large numbers of datasets covering the “long tail” of funded research. The “long tail” refers to the many thousands of small projects with small, discrete datasets as compared to the few large national databases that form the core of ÆKOS. Why Have We Developed Our Products
