ALGEBRA READINESS LESSON 2-1 Warm Up Lesson 2-1 Warm Up

ALGEBRA READINESS “Integers and Absolute Value” (2-1) What are “integers”? How can you compare the order of numbers? What are “opposites”? What is “absolute value”? integer: all of the positive and negative whole numbers, including zero Example: To compare numbers, put them on a number line. Numbers on the right are always bigger than numbers on the left. You can also write them all in decimal form and compare the place values from largest to smallest. Example: opposites: Two numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line or in “opposite” directions from zero Example: absolute value: a numbers distance from zero shown by surrounding the number with these absolute value brackets | | Example: |-3| and |3| both have an absolute value of 3 (both are opposites that are 3 away from 0); |-24| and |24| both have an absolute value of 24 (both are 24 away from 0)

ALGEBRA READINESS Find each absolute value. a. |–19| 19. On the number line, –19 is 19 units from 0. So, |–19| = 19. b. |67| On the number line, 67 is 67 units from 0. So, |67| = 67. Integers and Absolute Value LESSON 2-1 Additional Examples

ALGEBRA READINESS The lowest recorded temperature in Asia is – 90ºF; in North America, it is –81ºF. Which continent has the lower recorded temperature? Find the negative integer with the greater absolute value. | –90| = 90 | –81| = 81 The number with the greater absolute value is –90. Asia has the lower recorded temperature. Integers and Absolute Value LESSON 2-1 Additional Examples

ALGEBRA READINESS Evaluate 5 |z| for z = –2.4. Substitute –2.4 for z. 5 |z| = 5 | –2.4| = 5(2.4) Find the absolute value. = 12 Multiply. Integers and Absolute Value LESSON 2-1 Additional Examples

ALGEBRA READINESS 1. The surface of the Dead Sea is about 1,300 feet below sea level. Use an integer to represent this elevation. 2. Write the opposite of –12. Find each absolute value. 3. |6| 4. |–3| –1, Integers and Absolute Value LESSON 2-1 Lesson Quiz
