Josef Mengele and Carl Clauberg By: Jessica Vazquez

Born on March 16, 1911 In Germany Died on February 7, 1979 Brazil Was awarded medical Degree by University Of Frankfurt in July 1938 Was given the nickname “Angel of Death” Is mostly known for doing Experiments on twins at Auschwitz Was buried under the Name “Wolfgang Gerhard” in Brazil

Childhood Was born on March 16, 1911 in Bayern, Germany Born the first of three children to a wealthy, strict Catholic family (Karl and Alois) Parents were Karl and Walburga Mengele Was very popular and smart at school

Education Studied Philosophy in Munich (he met Alfred Rosenberg) At the age of 20, he was accepted into the Steel Helmets In 1937 he was accepted into the Nazi party (after that, he applied for membership in SS Earned his medical degree from University of Frankfurt (here he joins the Institute for Hereditary Biology and Racial Hygiene

Auschwitz Arrived there on May 30, 1943 Chief provider for the gas chambers and crematoria He did a lot of medical experiments that killed more than 400,000 people Had a special interest in identical twins

Experiments He looked for people with unique hereditary traits (dwarfs, giants, people with club foot and his special interest were twins) He believed that if they could get rid of all of the non- Aryans and he could find the secret of the twins (of every Aryan woman being able to have blond-hair and blue-eyed twins, the world would be “saved”)

Twins Large amounts of blood was drawn from arms He would try to make people have blue eyes (drops or injections of chemicals were put in the eyes) Diseases would be injected into one twin and see how it affected the other one When they were “done” they would kill the person (fastest way was to inject chloroform or phenol in their hearts)

After Auschwitz He fled in January 1945 In he escaped to Argentina June 7, 1959-West Germany issues its arrest warrant for Mengele 1964-Universities of Frankfurt and Munich withdraw academic degrees 1979-Was buried in a grave under Wolfgang Gerhard ’ s name

Died in August 1957 Was born in 1898 in Wuppertal Was arrested in Did not get a chance to Go to trial because Of death asked Heinrich Himmler to offer him The possibility to Sterilize people for experimentation Before wanting To sterilize Women, he wanted To help them conceive Was looking for a cheap And efficient way to Sterilize women

Early life Was born in Wuppertal in 1898 to a craftsmen family He participated in WWI as an infantryman Later studied medicine and advanced to doctor-in- chief at the University of Gynecological Clinic in Kiel Entered NSDAP and became supporter of its ideology

Life (cont.) was appointed professor for gynecology at the Koenigsberg University Was a well-respected doctor who wanted to be able to help infertile women to conceive asked Heinrich Himmler for opportunity to sterilize people for “experiments”

Auschwitz Arrived in December 1942 to Block 10 He would inject liquid acids into their uterus without anesthetics Women died from horrible pain and bleeding After death, he would remove their ovaries and send them to Berlin for further analysis

Leaving Auschwitz He escaped the Red Army and went to Ravensbruck where he continued experiments It is estimated that he killed about 700 women put to trial in Soviet Union and sentenced to 25 years 7 years later- he was released and returned to Federal Republic of Germany Survivors protest and was arrested in 1955 but died 1957 before going to trial

Similarities They both followed other people’s ideas (Mengele-- Rosenberg and Clauberg-- NSDAP) They both wanted to do “good for the people” Both were arrested and released and arrested again Both worked at Auschwitz Both had “special interest” in a certain type of group

Differences Clauberg started off good (kind of) Mengele always believed that Aryan race was superior Mengele had a special interest in twins, dwarfs, and giants Clauberg had a special interest in women and babies Clauberg had nothing to do with selection Mengele helped with selection and was harsh and cruel about it
