The Brooklyn Bridge is a bridge in the city of New York, one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States, with a length of 1,834 meters and is located on the East River, connecting the districts (boroughs) Manhattan and Brooklyn .

When completed it was the largest suspension bridge in the world, and the first to make use of cables. It was the first steel bridge suspended from the world and its huge support towers were once the tallest structures in the entire city of New York.

THE Construction began in 1869 THE Construction began in 1869. The Brooklyn Bridge was completed fourteen years later and was opened for use on May 24, 1883. On the first day a total of 1,800 vehicles and 150,300 people crossed it. Its main curve has 21,486 meters. The bridge cost $ 188 million to build it and approximately 27 people died during the construction.

Plan of one tower for the Brooklyn Bridge, 1867

When completed, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world - 50% larger than the previous building - and she became a major bridge reference tourists. Additionally, for several years the towers were the largest sculptures in the United States. The style of architecture is Gothic bridge.

The bridge was designed by the architect John Augustus Roebling in Trenton, New Jersey. Roebling and his company built small suspension bridges, like the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge in Cincinnati, Ohio and the Waco Suspension Bridge in Waca, Texas, these served with engineering prototypes for the final design.

When construction began, the foot Roebling suffered a serious injury in an accident, and within a few weeks he died of tetanus. When the bridge was opened, the wife of his son Washington, Emily Warren Roebling, was the first person to cross; Washington could not get out of your home due to depression that he suffered at the time and watched the building through a telescope.

On March 1, 1908 the Lebanese Rasid Bazil opened fire on a car full of Orthodox Jews, members of Lubavitch. Baz was charged with murder and sentenced to 141 years in prison. At first the action was not classified as a terrorist attack, but later, the FBI classified as such. The access road to the bridge on the Manhattan side was named Ari Halberstam Memorial Ramp in honor of the victim.

The construction of the Brooklyn Bridge was detailed in the book The Great Bridge ("The Great Bridge"), David McCullough, and a film by Ken Burns. On March 21, 2006 were found in the area around the bridge remnants of the Cold War, as a refuge containing medicines and food to survive a nuclear attack.

Curiosity: A few days after his inauguration, to dispel a rumor that the Brooklyn Bridge was unsafe, a circus made its advertising across the bridge with a parade of 21 elephants.

SOME NOTABLE EVENTS: FIRST FLIGHT UNDER THE BRIDGE In 1919, Giorgio Pessi piloted what was then the world's largest airplane, the Caproni Ca.5, under the bridge.

100TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS The centennial celebrations on May 24, 1983, saw a cavalcade of cars crossing the bridge, led by President Ronald Reagan. A flotilla of ships visited the harbor, parades were held, and in the evening the sky over the bridge was illuminated by Grucci Fireworks. The Brooklyn Museum exhibited a selection of the original drawings made for the bridge's construction, some by Washington Roebling himself.
