Rates of Weathering 01/6/ pgs IN: What can you add to your model of sediment/soil formation?

 Different types of rock weather at different rates.  Climate  Elevation  Composition of rock

 Differential Weathering - a process by which softer, less weather- resistance rocks wear away, leaving harder, more weather- resistant rocks behind.

 Remember, weathering takes place on the outside surface of rocks.  The more surface area the faster the weathering occurs.  Small rocks weather faster than large rocks.

 Heat vs. Cold  Wet vs. Dry  Wind

 Rocks at higher elevations weather quickly because they exposed to more wind, rain, and ice.

OUT: How does surface area affect the rate of weathering?
