Rates of Weathering 01/6/ pgs IN: What can you add to your model of sediment/soil formation?
Different types of rock weather at different rates. Climate Elevation Composition of rock
Differential Weathering - a process by which softer, less weather- resistance rocks wear away, leaving harder, more weather- resistant rocks behind.
Remember, weathering takes place on the outside surface of rocks. The more surface area the faster the weathering occurs. Small rocks weather faster than large rocks.
Heat vs. Cold Wet vs. Dry Wind
Rocks at higher elevations weather quickly because they exposed to more wind, rain, and ice.
OUT: How does surface area affect the rate of weathering?
