Electric and Magnetic Forces

Types of Forces Friction Static Sliding Air Resistance Gravity Electric Magnetic

Background All materials contain electrical charges.

Background • However, friction (rubbing materials together) can transfer negative charges from one material to another

Background • Some materials are better than others at: - Becoming positive, such as: Human hair Wool Cat fur - Staying neutral such as: Cotton Steel Becoming negative, such as: Copper Latex Polyester Styrofoam

Electrical Forces • Objects that carry a positive (+) or negative (-) charge can exert (create) electrical forces

Electric Forces Electric Force = an attractive pull or a repulsive push between two electrically-charged objects + - - - - - - + + + Repulsive push Attractive pull

Electric Forces • When charges are alike, objects will repel and move away • Objects with opposite charges, will attract and move towards one another

Types of Forces Friction Static Sliding Air Resistance Gravity Electric Magnetic

Magnetic Forces Magnetic Force = an attractive pull or a repulsive push between two magnets A magnet is any material that can generate magnetic forces.

Magnetic Forces Not all materials/metals are magnets. Some materials that ARE magnetic are: Iron Nickel Cobalt Neodymium All magnets have a North and South pole

Magnetic Forces Magnets with opposite poles (N-S) will always attract and move together When the poles are alike (N-N) or (S-S), magnets will repel and move away

Electric Forces vs. Magnetic Forces Sometimes electric forces are mistaken for magnetic forces because the interactions are so similar. However, the behaviors are happening for different reasons.
