Objectives O Write in agendas:  Bird Feeder Challenge  Safety Test Friday! O Set up STEM Notebooks

STEM Notebook Instructions 1.Write your first and last name and class period on the outside cover. Feel free to draw, put a cool sticker, or picture on the front that relates to STEM. 2.Number the first 20 pages, front and back. When you open up the notebook, odd numbers are on the right and even numbers on the left. 3.Tape one large envelope into the front cover of the notebook. Label the envelope “bell work” You will store your bell work for the week in the “bell work” envelope. We will keep post-it notes in the basket at your group for the “Brain Board” and tweeting.

STEM Notebook Instructions 4. Go to the back of the notebook. At the top of the last 5 pages, title the pages Vocabulary Reference. You will use these pages to make note of important vocabulary words. 5. When improving your research, lab work, reflection journals, etc. DO NOT erase in your scientist’s notebook. Put a line through it (NO scribbling) and initial or just make your improvements below the original writing. 6. Bell work will be kept on the same sheet of paper for the week. You will date each day, write the full answer, and justify your answers (explain), unless instructed differently. 7. Bell work is turned into your class period’s inbox every Friday.

Bird Feeder Challenge O Birds migrate through Rutherford County every year. But the reduction of farm land has decreased available food. In middle Tennessee, there are large bodies of water where birds might feed (i.e. Percy Priest & Cumberland River). O Plan and build a prototype of a station that can be placed in water where birds can find and eat food. O As you test, you will always find ways to make it work better. Improving design based on testing is called the engineering design process.

Essential questions to ponder… O Am I able to identify the difference between controls and variables? O What are the ongoing series of events of the Engineering Design Process? O Am I able to creatively construct a prototype that meets certain specifications using the engineering design process? O See any important vocab?

Use a Post-It Note to “tweet” about the following question: Use a Post-It Note to “tweet” about the following question: How are you going to use the EDP to design and construct your bird feeder prototype? Tweet a response…
