In America Christmas is celebrated on December 25. Christmas is one of international holidays in America. The tradition of singing Christmas carols came from England, and the tradition of dressing the Christmas tree - from Germany.

Santa Claus The prototype of Santa Claus was a Saint Nicholas, who lived in the 6th century. The old man was known for his kindness, generosity and love to children. December 6 was officially announced by the Catholic Church as the day of the Saint Nicholas. In the 17th century in America, he became known as Santa Claus.

Santa Claus In 1809, the writer Washington Irving for the first time used in his work the image of Santa, who brought presents to children. Irving's Santa used horse for movement. Deer were invented in 1823 by Clement Moore in his work «the Night before Christmas». Known to all the image of Santa as overweight good- natured old man in a red jacket was created by the American artist Thomas Nast and published in 1863, at the height of the Civil war. Nast also invented the workshop of Santa.

Christmas carols A Christmas carol is song or hymn whose lyrics are on the theme of Christmas or the winter season in general and which are traditionally sung in the period before Christmas. The first Christmas hymns appeared in fourth century in Rome. Traditionally, carols are based on medieval chords, and exactly it gives them their uniquely characteristic musical sound.

Christmas tree As previously mentioned the custom of the Christmas tree developed in early modern Germany in 16th and possibly in 15th century. It acquired popularity beyond Germany during the second half of the 19th century. The tree was traditionally decorated with food such as apples, nuts or dates. In the 18th century, it began to be illuminated by candles, which with electrification were replaced by Christmas lights

Christmas dinner Christmas dinner in the United States is usually eaten in the afternoon on 25 December. The dinner usually consists of roast turkey sometimes with roast beef or pork. Served with stuffing, gravy and sometimes forcemeat. Famous desserts Christmas pudding, mince pies with brandy, butter or cream.
