Events Leading to the American Revolution! ;D Laura Rochelle 11/5/10 Hilton 8-4

Navigation Acts ’s Directed flow of goods between England and the colonies. Colonists couldn’t use foreign ships, even for a cheaper price. Prevented colonists from sending products such as sugar or tobacco outside of the country. Some colonists ignored the Navigation Acts and smuggled They were NOT happy! >:( tobacco ships

Proclamation of King George declared that the Appalachian Mountains were the temporary western boundary for the colonies. This angered many colonists, especially the ones who owned shares in land companies. They were furious because they had already bought land west of the mountains and Britain ignored their claims.

Stamp Act 1765 Placed a tax on almost all printed material in the colonies. Newspapers, pamphlets, wills, and playing cards were some of the things that were taxed. All printed material had to have a stamp. The Stamp Act angered the colonists. They formed the Stamp Act Congress. The congress had delegates from nine of the colonies. They met in New York. The Stamp Act Congress drafted a petition to the king and Parliament declaring that the colonies couldn’t be taxed except by their own assemblies.

Declaratory Act 1766 Stated that Parliament had the right to tax and make decisions for the British colonies “in all cases.” The colonists were not happy with the Declaratory Act. They brought back the boycott.

Quartering Act 1765 Required colonists to quarter, or house and feed British soldiers. The colonists were scared of standing armies. They generally preferred to rely on militia units rather than formal armies. They didn’t like the cost of quartering the soldiers.

Townshend Act 1767 Taxed any imported goods. Taxed even the goods that the colonists had to import because they didn't produce them. Colonists very angry. Brought back the boycott.

Boston Massacre 1770 Fighting broke out between towns people and soldiers. The crowd threw stones, snowballs, oyster shells, and pieces of wood at the soldiers. Five colonists were killed. The Boston Massacre was described as a “slaughter of innocent Americans by bloodthirsty redcoats” by Samuel Adams. Led to stronger boycotts on British goods.

Tea Act/Boston Tea Party 1773 Gave the East Indian Company the right to ship tea to the colonies without paying most of the taxes usually placed on tea Also allowed the company to bypass colonial merchants and sell its tea directly to shopkeepers at a lower price. The East India Company had the lowest tea prices and a tea advantage over colonial merchants. Boston Tea Party- December 16 A group of men disguised themselves as Mohawk Indians and threw 342 chests of tea into the harbor.

Coercive (Intolerable) Acts 1774 Closed Boston Harbor until the Massachusetts colonists paid for the ruined tea. Harsh laws intended to punish the people of Massachusetts for their resistance. Banned most town meetings and self government. Colonists very mad. Said that the Coercive acts violated their rights as English citizens.
