Presentation transcript:

He was born to parents who were former slaves; he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. Then scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population-and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time.

1) He was an African-American historian, author, journalist and the founder of the Association for the study of African American life and history. 2) He was the author of the book, “The Miseducation of the Negro”, published in ) He promoted Negro History week on 1937, publishing the first issue of the Negro History Bulletin 4) Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as the “Father of African American History”, created several key organizations and founded Negro History week (precursor to African American history month. 5) He created the Negro History Bulletin, developed for teachers in elementary and high school grades, and published continuously since 1937.

DR.CARTER G.WOODSON was know as the “Father of Black History,”. He was the son of former slaves. In 1912, Woodson became the second African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University (the first was W. E. B. Dubois). Dr. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). ASALH views the promotion of Black History Month as one of the most important components of advancing Dr. Woodson’s legacy.

I learned that even if you were a slave you had to work heard to get to school and to get a job. Dr. Carter G. Woodson had to work hard to go to school and he became the father of African American history. And you could learn a lot about him if you take the time to read about him.
