OBJECTIVE 8.03: RECOGNIZE CONSERVATION COMPONENTS.

Conservation not only preserves natural resources but also saves money.

Energy Guide label states the average yearly cost of operate that appliance (refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines) Energy Star label Is placed appliances that exceed energy standards for conservation. Energy star… Save money and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency. modified by CMagno Energy Guide versus Energy Star

Homes that are designed to conserve energy receive an Energy Star Rating ENERGY STAR ENERGY STAR is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) voluntary program that helps businesses and individuals save money and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency.

Conserving Water Daily  Run washing machines and dishwashers with FULL loads only  Take short showers  Don’t let water run when brushing teeth  Fix leaky faucets and toilets  Use ultra-low flush toilets (building code may require these in new homes)  Use sprinklers in early morning or late at night to prevent evaporation in warmer air.

Conserving Energy Daily  Lower thermostat to 68 in winter and raise to 78 in summer  Lower water heater temperature to 120 degrees  Choose Energy Star appliances, TVs, computers, and light bulbs  Unplug appliances and any electrical cords that are not being used  Choose compact fluorescent bulbs

Conserving Water Through Landscaping  Xeriscaping refers to conserving water through creative landscaping.

Xeriscape Benefits 1. Saves Water by using tolerant plants. Xeriscape can reduce landscape water use by 50% - 75%.

2. No contamination of the water supply. Using plants native to your area will eliminate the need for chemical supplements such as pesticides and fertilizers.

3. Lowers Pollution. Fossil fuel consumption from gas mowers is minimized or eliminated with smaller turf (grass) areas. Small turf areas can be maintained with a reel mower.

Conserving Energy Through Topography  Topography: the art or science of making maps that show the height, shape, etc., of the land in a particular area.  Topography is the way the land lays  Type of energy conservation  Example: When a home is placed at the bottom of a hill so that protected from a cold North wind.  The most important thing to remember is that close contour lines mean steep terrain and open contour lines mean flat terrain  Topographical maps can be used for conservation benefits

 Orientation is positioning a building to take advantage of the topography  Orientation is a type of energy conservation  This includes placing a building on a site by considering the location of the sun, the prevailing winds, water sources, and scenic views Conserving Energy Through Orientation
