Vocational training course for reuse, management and valorisation of terracing Town of Chiavenna – Pianazzola Organized and promoted by IreAlp-Ecology and Applied Economy in Alpine Areas Research Institute State University of Milan - Human Geography Institute, Earth Science Department, Valchiavenna Station - …..

Whom the course is addressed to? The course is addressed to terracing owners’ and to sector operators’ who, from different points of view, would like to enrich their knowledge in the field of recovery, management, productive and cultural valorisation of terracing.

Course objective The main objective of the course is to provide the participants with technical, scientific and manual knowledge in the following disciplines: Human Geography, particularly referring to historical, landscape and cultural aspects of the considered territory; Agronomy / Pedology; Economics / Territorial Marketing; Applied Geology / Hydraulic Engineering; Activities in the field of construction and maintenance of dry-stone walls and in the field of valorisation of terraced landscapes.

Course length and organisation The course length is 60 hours (from April to June) organised as follows: 15 hours of classes (weekly meetings of 3 hours each); 15 hours of scientific excursions (during week-ends); 30 hours of practice. At the end of the course, an attendance certificate will be delivered to all the participants.

Data sheet 1: pilot area PIANAZZOLA –BREGAGLIA Geological, morphological, geographical and anthropic surveys on the pilot area PIANAZZOLA-BREGAGLIA, and evaluation of the state of conservation (aim to define and quantify those elements that contribute to destabilize the terraced slope: 60 % Thematic MAPS (scale 1: 25000) done A1 Topographic map and terraced areas A2 Lithological map A3 Bedrock and quaternary cover map A4a Aspect map A4b Slope acclivity map Alpter Project - STATE OF THE ART UNIMI

Other Thematic maps 70 % Main interesting scientific and cultural sites map Tourism and other economic features map Alpter Project - STATE OF THE ART UNIMI

Data sheet 1:5000- pilot area PIANAZZOLA 50 % On the base of the 1:25000 surveys, considering the continuity of the terracements, PIANAZZOLA has been chosen for the detailed analysis. The slope and terracement features (slope aspect, terracement geometry, culture and conservation state …) are different in the pilot area. A single data sheet seems not to be sufficient to describe the PIANAZZOLA terracements features. Some representative sub-areas have been chosen to detailed their characteristics.
