ICT Implementation in Students team 3 rd December, 2012 Shastri Bhavan, New Delhi Points for discussion Education Draft Document

We Have Kept in Mind… … Students’ needs inputs are key to decisions in all other areas, given they are the ultimate beneficiary … Adoption of technology by students in their learning is rapid, graded, and distinct/distant from that of teachers & parents … We need to listen to students on what they need from / through technology, given above … Receiving inputs from students / assessing impact on students of technology is a continuous process, and needs to be made systemic … While measuring above for and from students, that of teachers is also inextricably intertwined

Guiding Questions What are student needs (and that of teachers) as ICT becomes integral to the process of teaching and Learning What are the core ICT interventions and functions for improving various educational activities What levels of ICT interventions are critical/essential/desirable across Primary, Secondary and Higher Education (and Vocational Education as well, although we have not yet addressed this specifically) 2

Approach to Inputs / Needs Assessment Compilation of experiences and developing a matrix for needs assessment Needs assessment focus on educational outcomes, learning returns ICT-infused education ICT interventions categorized for primary, middle & secondary schools, and higher education Needs assessment for ICT interventions include a range of ICT technologies / products – Computing devices in particular tablets – ‘Intelligent’ classrooms – Mobile Phones, Smart Phones – Internet, Radio, TV, Video – Range of educational software and multi media tools – Digital / digitised content Higher Education Secondary School Middle School Primary Schools ICT Interventions 3

Student Inputs Analysis Student ICT Needs Classroom Interventions  Knowledge Level Peer Learning & Collaboration  New age skills and learning Tutorials & Practices  Application and Analysis Assignments  Synthesis & Creation Management & Development  Self Development & Soft Skills Assessments & Evaluation  Un Learning & Reflection 5

Teacher Needs Analysis Teacher ICT Needs Classroom Teaching  Lectures, Teaching Aids, tools Personal & Professional Development  Self improvement, Ahead of Curve Experiments & Labs  Application, Analysis Assignments & Projects  Synthesis & Creation Administration & Management  Smart & Effective Work Assessment & Evaluation  CCE, Feedback 5

Next Steps Project Vox Vidyarthi We need to understand the student perspectives well - through inputs from them A comprehensive survey of students (and teachers) at Primary, High School and Higher Education is proposed The survey tools are ready and plan for execution of the survey is under progress 6

Vox Vidyarthi: Needs Analysis Synthesizing our work and experience so far into a needs matrix Conducting nationwide online and offline surveys of Teachers and Students in multiple languages Analyzing responses to refine and prioritize the matrix Proposing a roadmap to meet the needs of students

Vox Vidyarthi: Survey Key Focus Areas Profile: Respondent demographics Access: Access to IT and ICT resources and the extent of utilization of these resources Patterns of use: How are these resources used? Are there visible benefits to their use? Are there bottlenecks to use of these resources? Issues: What are the issues being faced? Are there any suggestions to resolve them? Is there any structured & sustained measurement of outcomes? Opportunities: What can be done to improve the system?

Survey Methodology Design surveys to address known pain-points and to elicit latent needs, unknown challenges, non-measured impact Administer questionnaire with help from individuals, social networks, schools, governmental and non-government organizations Classify/Cluster responses based on key focus areas Build input/need statements that are clear articulations of challenges

Schedule By mid January, 2013 – Finish Survey Design and pilots in a single language – Translate into multiple languages as identified – Determine target samples and implementation plan – Enlist partners By End March, 2013 – Complete survey nationwide – File preliminary data analysis report By End May 2013 – Complete inputs/needs matrix – List suggested solutions – Present to the committee for discussion and consensus – Provide an action plan for solution implementation

Vox Vidyarthi: Post May 2013 Correlation diagram between expectations & inputs, and desired outcomes (Potentially) A framework for long-term inputs/needs gathering, and assessment of outcomes Suggested framework for sustaining this exercise for the long-term
