Poetry can be happy or sad.

Poetry can be fun. It can have questions or statements. Whatif Last night, while I lay thinking here, Some Whatifs crawled inside my ear And pranced and partied all night long And sang their same old Whatif song: Whatif I'm dumb in school? Whatif they've closed the swimming pool? Whatif I get beat up? Whatif there's poison in my cup? Whatif I start to cry? Whatif I get sick and die? Whatif I flunk that test? Whatif green hair grows on my chest? Whatif nobody likes me? Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me? Whatif I don't grow taller? Whatif my head starts getting smaller?

It can be simple or fancy. This one is really fancy It can be simple or fancy. This one is really fancy! You don’t have to read it. The Unicorn A long time ago, when the earth was green and there was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen, and they run around free while the world was bein' born, and the loveliest of all was the Unicorn. There were green alligators and long-neck geese. There were humpy bumpy camels and chimpanzees. There were cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born The loveliest of all was the Unicorn.

This was written by a teacher when she was 10 years old. It can be really simple. This was written by a teacher when she was 10 years old. A Bird A bird came down the walk. It did not know I saw, It bit an angle worm in half, And ate the fellow raw!!!

Poems can be read quickly or slowly. Humpty Dumpty Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the King's horses, And all the King's men Couldn't put Humpty together again! Slowly Slowly the tide creeps up the sand, Slowly the shadows cross the land, Slowly the cart horse pulls his mile, Slowly the man mounts his stile.

Homework Machine

Homework Machine By Shel Silverstein The Homework Machine , oh the Homework Machine, Most perfect contraption that’s ever been seen. Just put in your homework, then drop in a dime, Snap on the switch, and in ten seconds time, Your homework comes out, quick and clean as can be. Here it is – “nine plus four?” and the answer is “three”. Three? Oh me… I guess it’s not as perfect As I thought it would be..

Can you read it with rhythm? What are the rhyming words? The Homework Machine , oh the Homework Machine, Most perfect contraption that’s ever been seen.

Just put in your homework, then drop in a dime, Try the next lines: Just put in your homework, then drop in a dime, Snap on the switch, and in ten seconds time,

You homework comes out, quick and clean as can be. Here it is – “nine plus four?” and the answer is “three.” Three? Oh me…

The ending I guess it’s not as perfect As I thought it would be..

What other kinds of machines would you like to make your life easier?

What is your machine called? The Chocolate Machine. Example What is your machine called? The Chocolate Machine. What can it do? (move, clean, help……) It makes chocolate in a few seconds. Write some words about what it looks like (size, colour, shape). It is wonderful. It is brown and looks like a desk top computer. What is so interesting about it? It can make delicious chocolate, for just one dollar, in a few seconds.

The most wonderful invention there has ever been. You can repeat the 1st line to add emphasis. The Chocolate Machine The chocolate machine The chocolate machine. The most wonderful invention there has ever been. Put in a dollar and then count to ten. Spin it and say those numbers again. The chocolate comes out delicious and brown. But if you eat too much your mother will frown. So hide it somewhere where she cannot see Then you can be as happy as happy can be. The end of the 3rd line rhymes with the end of lines 1 & 2. Lines 4 & 5 should rhyme. Lines 6 & 7 should rhyme too. The final two lines should rhyme as well.

Round Up What is the rhyming structure in Homework Machine? 2. Which words rhyme in the poem? 3. What other types of poems have we looked at in this lesson?
