Lab: From Copper to Copper Investigation 4-E p Chemistry, Clancy et al

Overview of the experiment Starting with copper metal, we’ll carry out five successive reactions to end up with copper metal. Look for these reactions: synthesis decomposition single displacement double displacement

Reaction A: Cu(s) + HNO 3 (aq)  Predict the reaction type. Watch the demonstration of the reaction. Explain why this cannot be a single displacement reaction. Cu is below (not above) H in the activity series.

The equation for the rxn is: Cu(s) + HNO 3 (aq)  Cu(NO 3 ) 2 (aq) + NO 2 (g) + H 2 O(l)
