“No more money for Wall Street and war, demand jobs and income for the workers and the poor” With a Partner, answer the following questions: 1. What are these people doing? 2. What is the meaning of the sign? 3. Why are they doing this?

Occupy Wall Street Who: Middle and lower class Americans who are upset at wealthy businessmen and Wall Street investors. What: A protest that originated on Wall Street, in New York City. Where: US nationwide (New York, Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco and other cities). Protests recently started in Greece, Japan, Hong Kong, Spain and England too. When: The protests started on September 16, 2011 and are ongoing. Why: Protestors claim that the financial system is set up to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. They demand a new system where there is a more equal distribution of resources.

People are upset that the wealthiest people in the country have most of the money and everyone else is struggling for money, resources, and jobs. 2. How does President Obama feel about the protestors? He believes the protestors are upset by the way America’s financial system works and that is an understandable frustration. 3. How are the police responding to this? The police have arrested hundreds of people for blocking traffic in and around Wall Street. 4. What kind of people are protesting? Most of the protestors are truck drivers, teachers, nurses, and transportation workers.

Small Group Discussion: In Groups of 4, please discuss the following questions: 1. Do you support the protestors? Why? 2. Do you agree with what they are doing? 3. If you were in America, would you be on Wall Street protesting?

Midterm Presentations – November 1 st In groups of four, choose a global event or topic to research. Examples: terrorism, nuclear weapons, women’s rights, education, climate change, AIDS, healthcare, poverty, gun control, gay marriage, tourism, gutter oil… The presentation must be 4-5 minutes and everyone must speak equally. You will also turn in a written script. Your topic must answer the following: 1. Why is this important globally? 2. Who is being affected the most? 3. What is being done to address (or fix) the issue? 4. What else is important to know? **Each group must have a different topic **Your topic must be approved by me; we will discuss next week.
