Welcome to the parent’s workshop about written methods in maths Mrs Taylor and Mrs Avci
What are we going to do this evening? To work through each of the formal written methods we teach at Castle Batch for addition, subtraction, multiplication and Division in years 5 and 6.. Consistent, progressive approach as we have a four rules policy Model each method → Practise + - x ÷
Why? We want all children to develop efficient methods of calculation with all four operations. We want children to develop the ability to be able to choose appropriate methods for written calculation.
Meeting Expectations Year 5 Add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including using formal written methods (columnar addition and subtraction) Multiply numbers up to 4 digits by a one- or two digit number using a formal written method, including long multiplication for two-digit numbers. Divide numbers up to 4 digits by a one- digit number using formal written method of short division and interpret remainders appropriately for the context Year 6 Consolidate adding and subtracting whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including using formal written columnar addition and subtraction. Multiply multi digit numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long multiplication. Divide numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal methods of short or long division, and interpret remainders as appropriate for the context as whole numbers, fractions or by rounding
Addition- Year 5 87, ,465 = 187, ,465 Addition- Year 6 What children need to know in order to be successful: Place value. Number bonds to 10
Now try these ! 65, ,638 = 432, ,423 =
Subtraction Year 5 87,234 ‒ 32, ,234 ‒ 372,465 Subtraction Year 6 What children need to know in order to be successful: Place value. Number bonds to 10
Now try these ! 43,847 – 22,968 = 735,384 – 604,497=
Multiplication Year x 7 and 3964 x 32 ( grid or long method) 2187 x 34 (long method) Multiplication Year 6 What children need to know in order to be successful: Place value, times tables and division facts.
Now try these ! 7238 x 6 = 2849 x 83 =
Division Year ÷ 6 = (short division) 884 ÷ 17 = (long division) 2970 ÷ 15 = Division Year 6 What children need to know in order to be successful: Times tables and division facts.
Now try these ! 2868 ÷ 8 = (short division) 6188 ÷ 34 = (long division)
