What is Chemistry? Most dictionaries define chemistry as “the greatest subject that there ever was and ever will be because it is so super awesome!” #1 Chemistry =

What is Chemistry? Another definition you might see is “chemistry is the study of matter,” which is also a great definition! But….

What is Matter? Matter is ANYTHING that takes up space and has mass…that pretty much means everything. This means chemists are super smart because they pretty much know everything.

States of Matter Solid – particles packed closely together, defined shape and volume Liquid – particles slide past one another, defined volume, but take the shape of their container. Gas – particles bounce around freely, spread out evenly to fill container (take the shape and volume of container)

How Do We Describe Matter How Do We Describe Matter? (other than the physical state of solid, liquid or gas…) PHYSICAL Properties CHEMICAL Properties

How Do We Describe Matter How Do We Describe Matter? (other than the physical state of solid, liquid or gas…) PHYSICAL Properties CHEMICAL Properties Color Smell Mass Volume Length Boiling Point Description that can be observed or measured. Flammable? Combustable? Reacts with other substances?... …HOW IT REACTS CHEMICALLY!!! Description of an ability.

Physical Properties Intensive Property – property that does NOT change when you change the amount of substance. Ex: Color, Texture, Density, Melting Point Extensive Property – property that changes when you change the amount of substance. Ex: Volume, Mass

What types of changes does matter undergo What types of changes does matter undergo? (HINT: There are 2 types of changes…) PHYSICAL Changes CHEMICAL Changes The composition of the substance IS changed. Possible signs include: 1. Energy absorbed or released 2. Color change 3. Gas Produced 4. Precipitate- solid that separates from solution 5. Not easily reversed The composition of the substance does not change, just the “appearance”
